1- ENERGY
The energy provided by your horse’s diet is used for :

MAINTENANCE, WORK, REST PERIODS, GROWTH, GESTATION, LACTATION

Energy requirements are measured in equine forage units (E.F.U.)
1 E.F.U. = 2200 kcalories of net energy
(60 % of feedstuff crude energy)

3- WATER
Water must be at room temperature : approximately  15°C

Horses weighing 500 kg, light work :
30 to 40 l/day

Intense work : 50 l/day

Lactating mares  : 50 l/day

Table indicating the requirements for a horse weighing  500 Kg

ENERGY
(EFU)

Min. PROTEIN
(EDNM)

AT REST 4 300 g
LIGHT WORK 5 390 g
MODERATE WORK 6 425 g
INTENSE WORK 7 500 g
2- PROTEIN
The horse’s protein requirements are expressed as equine digestible nitrogen matter  :

EDNM

This is the minimum amount of digestible protein that horses require.
In the majority of feed rations, the EDNM values are considerably higher than the minimum values in order to ensure an optimum balance in terms of amino acids.
